Installing OpenSolaris

If you are brand-new to OpenSolaris you should start by visiting our downloads page to decide which of the available distributions is most suitable for you.

If you have questions about installation, or get stuck, there are lots of places where you can get help:

  • The opensolaris-help forum. A good source of information, and if you search the forum archives there's a fair chance someone will already have answered your question. The forum posts are mirrored on the opensolaris-help mailing list, so if you prefer you can subscribe to the mailing list and search the mailing list archives.

  • The Immigrants page set up by the folks in the Advocacy community, which is dedicated to bridging the gap and easing the transition between other UNIX OS's and OpenSolaris.

  • The Solaris Express Developers Edition (SXDE) site. Solaris Express Developer Edition is a free, quarterly release of Sun's next generation Solaris Operating System built from the source code repository at OpenSolaris.org. This site has a list of what is in each release, system requirements, video install guides and documentation for SXDE.

  • The Solaris Developers Install Forum. A forum where you can ask questions about the installation of SXDE. Once again, a quick search of the archives may reveal that your question has already been answered!

  • If you suspect your problem is related to a particular component of OpenSolaris but you don't know where best to ask your question, use the site search facility that is on each page to help you - for example if you are having a problem with a particular driver, try searching for the driver name.

  • If you think you've hit a bug, you can search our bugs database to see if it has already been reported, or to log a new bug if necessary.

  • BigAdmin, Sun's System Administrator resources and community. There's a wealth of information on Solaris Express, including the HCL (Hardware Compatibility List) as well as the Solaris Express Installation Check Tool, which will help you determine if your particular hardware is supported.

  • The OpenSolaris Documentation Community. There's a lot of useful documentation here, including videos showing you how to set up a laptop for dual boot, a RedHat to Solaris transition guide, a newbie FAQ and much more.

  • The SXDE documentation on docs.sun.com. This site contains the official Sun documentation of the latest SXDE release, which can either be viewed online or downloaded in PDF format, and of course it is all searchable.

  • The Genunix wiki. A community-run site with lots of information about OpenSolaris. If you have an OpenSolaris tip or trick, this would be a good place to share it with the rest of the community!

  • The documents section of solaris-x86.org. Lots of x86-specific tutorials and guides

  • The Solaris x86 Yahoo Group. For discussing issues relating to Solaris X86 platforms. Some of the topics that receive regular discussion on this forum include: Hardware compatibility and configuration questions, Software availability - especially driver updates, Technical Support Questions, User experiences with Solaris X86 and suspected bugs.

  • Some notes on OpenSolaris. Radu's blog containing notes and tips on OpenSolaris.
